Become the Specialized Tax Expert Your Organization Needs

Tax professionals who are serious about their field often run into a ceiling. The technical knowledge is there. What’s missing is the legal framework underneath it: the statutes, the procedural rules, the policy logic behind why the law works the way it does.

WashU Law’s online Master of Legal Studies in Taxation is built for tax professionals without a JD who want the legal foundation their work demands. The program covers federal and state tax law at the depth the profession actually requires, taught by practitioners who work in it every day.

In as little as one year, you’ll earn a competitive, comprehensive degree from a top-ranked law school — 100% online.

A Curriculum Built for Serious Tax Professionals

The MLS in Taxation opens with the foundational requirements shared across WashU Law’s online programs before moving into the substance of federal and state tax law.

The curriculum is demanding in the way that good legal education always is: it changes how you read a statute, how you assess risk and how you engage with the legal dimensions of the work you do every day.

The program covers the areas that define serious tax practice, including:

  • Federal income taxation
  • Corporate taxation
  • State and local taxation
  • Federal tax procedure
  • International taxation

Students also have the option to pursue supervised research in tax law or a legal externship, putting the curriculum to work in real professional contexts.

The WashU Law Online Classroom Experience

Students complete asynchronous coursework on their own schedule, then join live evening sessions (CST) once per week. Classes are kept intentionally small, just 10 to 15 students, so every participant is part of the conversation.

The online Master of Legal Studies in Taxation is taught by WashU Law’s distinguished faculty and expert practitioners. They teach the law and they work in it, which means the curriculum reflects both the legal frameworks and the professional realities students encounter in practice.

Lasting Connections and Career Benefits

WashU Law’s alumni network spans the globe, and online students can connect with it and the wider WashU Law community from day one through virtual events.

The WashU Center for Career Engagement is where that network becomes something you can act on. Advisers work one-on-one with students on resumes, cover letters and interview preparation, with employer connections built around tax and legal careers at non-profits, Big 4 firms and Fortune 500 companies. That support continues well after graduation.

Students can also deepen their experience through optional on-campus immersions held each spring in St. Louis, as well as supervised research projects and legal externships.
